SUMMARY
Atenolol is an active ingredient used in patients with hypertension, chronic stable angina, early myocardial infarction, and prevention of post – myocardial infarction, and supraventricular tachyarrhythmias. However, atenolol is ionized in the small intestine environment, which leads to its poor absorption and low oral bioavailability. Therefore, the floating form will help atenolol increase the time in the stomach, and help the drug dissolve in the gastric acid, which increases the contact area when it reaches the small intestine and is ready for absorption. The aims of study are to formulate of floating tablets containing atenolol 50 mg through the characteristic dependent variables of the direct compression method and floating tablets. Evaluating and comparing the formulations through parameters such as the flow rate of powder, lag time, floating time, tablet integrity, dissolution, water absorption, and mass gain. The results developed the formulation of floating tablets containing atenolol 50 mg to meet the prescribed criteria.
