Summary

Than Phuc (Homalomena vietnamensis J. Bogner & V. D. Nguyen), family Araceae, is a new species to science (2008), and is also a narrow endemic to central Vietnam, but previously there has been scientific name confusion. Rhizomes of Than Phuc are used as a medicine for joint pain and back pains… which is similar to the species of Thien nien kien (Homalomena spp.). Due to its limited distribution range and frequent exploitation, Than Phuc was listed in the Vietnamese Red Book, 2007 and the Red List of Vietnamese medicinal plants, 2001, 2006, 2019, which has to be conserved. The results of the study on morphological characteristics showed that the rhizome of Than Phuc has many traces of petioles, when broken horizontally, it turns ivory color and turns yellow and yellow-brown, fibrous, and has a characteristic aroma of “Thien nien kien” species. Leaf anatomy has many soft tissue defects. Anatomy of rhizomes and roots have many essential oilsecreting vesicles, containing yellow secretions inside. Rhizome powder has hard tissue cells of various shapes. Flower powder contains oval, yellow pollen grains. Both anatomy and medicinal powder showed needle-shaped calcium oxatlate crystals and prickly spherical calcium oxalat crystal. The above characteristics are the database for reference when identifying Homalomena vietnamensis species.
