Summary

Objective: Moringa oleifera is used in folklore to treat various ailments including anxiety, epilepsy, stress, fatigue, etc. However, there are not many scientific studies in Vietnam proving its effect on the nervous system. The study aimed to clarify the anxiolytic effects of extracts of leaves and branches of M. oleifera collected in Dong Nai.

Materials and methods:
Materials: M. oleifera leaves and branches were collected in Dong Nai in September 2020. Medicinal materials were extracted with water and 50% alcohol to obtain extracts including waterleaves (LN), alcohol-leaves (LC), water-branches (CN), alcohol-branches (CC). Animals: Swiss albino male mice, weight 20-25 g. Methods: Evaluation of acute oral toxicity by the Karber-Behrens method. Anxiolytic effects were investigated by using light dark model. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney test with Minitab 18.0 software.

Results: At the maximum dose that penetrated the needle, the extracts did not cause acute toxicity in rats. At the dose of 500 mg/kg, extracts LN and CC were only effective at 60 minutes, LC and CN had anxiolytic effects at both 30 minutes and 60 minutes after oral administration.

Conclusion: M. oleifera leaves and branches have safety and sedative effects.

Keywords: Sedation, light dark model, Moringa oleifera.
