Summary
In recent years the use of herbal slimming supplements (HSS) has increased a lot in Vietnam. Sibutramine’s group is one of the most occurring adulterants encountered in dietary supplements with slimming recommendations and causes many serious health problems for people using it. These adulterated dietary supplements often contain a herbal matrix. Therefore in order to identify the adulterants in analysis laboratories, we need to develop an efficient analytical method for easy to use equipment and techniques to perform an initial screening of samples. In this study, 1H-NMR was used as a complementary method for detecting HSS were adulterated with sibutramin. This method allows analysis of the whole sample with detection of both active and inactive ingredients in these complex matrices. The developed 1H-NMR spectroscopy method was validated by comparing with the sibutramin detection by LC-MS/MS technique. Twenty herbal slimming supplements in the market were analysed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Among the twenty formulations analyzed, two HSS (S6 and S13) were shown that were adulterated with sibutramin. In conclusion, the results of this study showed the power of 1H-NMR spectroscopy as a first-line method for the quick detection of adulteration as sibutramin in herbal slimming supplements and providing an effective quality control method.
