SUMMARY
Objective: Analyze the current situation of buying prescription medicines without a prescription by people at some community pharmacies in Hoang Mai district, Hanoi City in 2023. Research method: Cross-sectional description. Research results: 163 buyers purchased 245 prescription medicines without a prescription. They were purchased to treat diseases in most organs, the most of which were diseases of the respiratory system (33.5%); circulatory system (14.7%); digestive system (10.2%). The most commonly purchased medicine group is antiparasitic and anti-infection drugs (33.1%), followed by hormones and drugs that affect the endocrine system (24.1%); the third is cardiovascular drugs (14.7%). Only 37.4% of buyers know that the medicine they just bought is a prescription medicine; 60.1% of buyers think that old prescriptions can be reused; only 26.4% of buyers know that it is a violation for pharmacists to sell prescription medicines without a prescription. Only 8.6% drug sellers asked about prescriptions and 14.1% advised customers to visit a doctor. Conclusion: Buying prescription medicines without a prescription, especially antibiotics, at community pharmacies in Hoang Mai district is very common. People’s awareness is still limited and drug sellers’ compliance with regulations on prescription medicines purchase is not good.
